About

Since its founding in 1909, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People ("NAACP") has been on the front lines of the fight for civil rights and social justice.  For over 115 years, the NAACP has fought to eliminate race prejudice, advocate the for political and educational rights, amplify Black voices, and served as a leading organization and source of empowerment during the fight for civil rights.  To learn more about the mission and history of the NAACP, visit the Our History page of our national website.

The Rockdale County Branch of the NAACP is a nonprofit 501(c)(4) organization. The branch was founded in 1988, with Mrs. Sarah Jean Williams serving as the first president. Mrs. Williams was a go-getter, community activist, and leader, who believed in the power of family, community service, and justice for all. The branch's annual Community Service Award is named after Mrs. Williams. Mrs. Martha Fears served as the branch's first secretary. She was quiet, but organized and efficient in her role. The president and secretary roles are two of the most important positions within the organization, with the president providing leadership, while the secretary keeps the branch's records.

The mission of the Rockdale County Branch of the NAACP is to protect political, educational, social, and economic rights in Rockdale County. Those who live or work in Rockdale County may apply for membership through the branch. Once a member joins the association, they are encouraged to join one of the branch's standing committees. The committees support the association's mission by fostering community partnerships, implementing programs, and advocating for the rights of those in the community. Our organization and members stand against all forms of injustice and work to support the NAACP's mission and vision.

The Rockdale Branch of the NAACP plays a crucial role in the fight for citizens in the community. Organizations such as the NAACP provide essential support and resources to often underserved populations, helping to empower individuals and families to advocate for their rights. By addressing systemic inequalities and promoting access to crucial social services, the goal is to promote a more equitable society. Additionally, it is important for organizations like ours to serve as a voice for the community, ensuring that the needs and concerns of residents are represented in local and state policy.

Join us today, as the fight continues!

"The NAACP will continue to advocate for policies that dismantle systemic injustices and strive to improve the lives of the Black people and all Americans."
